Petunias

Petunias are one of the most popular garden plants. They offer many flower colors and plant habits. There are upright types that do great in the garden or a container and spreading types that will cascade over the edge of a container or fill in a large garden area.

Petunias need plenty of sun; at least six hours a day for best results. They are not particular about soil and will grow almost anywhere that has adequate moisture and fertility.

Petunias need to be pinched back occasionally to help keep the plants full and well branched. The process is simple; just pinch about an inch from a third to a half of the branch tips every couple of weeks. If they are getting leggy, pinch off more, if they are fairly full pinch back less. By pinching only part of the tips each time, you don't pinch off too many flower buds. If they get completley out of control cut the tops back severely, give them some fertilizer, and within a couple of weeks they will have filled out and will be blooming again.

We have petunias in packs, flats, and pots. The potted plants are the vigorous spreading types that will fill a lot of space quickly.
